Today we had our final legal appointment in China. We applied for Isaac's immigrant visa. They told us our paperwork was all in order, and his visa will be ready to pick up tomorrow afternoon. Our flight leaves early on Thursday morning, so we'll be on our way home soon!

ReplyDeleteCould you please say something about his wheelchair? Do you get to keep it indefinitely? I assume it's the one has used for a while. Or do you have to send it back once he gets fitted for and receives one in the states?
Sure! Isaac was fortunate to be a part of an organization called "An Orphan's Wish." It is one of several NGOs (Non Government Organizations) operating in China to help orphans. Sadly, this one closed its doors in August of 2013, but not before assuring that our son received an EXCELLENT foster care placement.
DeleteIsaac's chair is a pediatric size one, and is fitted with wooden platforms for the feet, and also to provide stability on the seat part. On top of the platforms on the seat are some foam sheets, and finally a foam cushion that he also uses in vehicles or other places he might sit for awhile. It helps to prevent pressure sores. This is his chair. It is well used, but very sturdy and he knows it well. He actually pops wheelies in it, and enjoys zooming downhill, and skidding to a stop - secretly I think he enjoys seeing the reaction from his Mama....
Our Little Princess Jen came to us from her orphanage with a pediatric wheelchair, though she only uses it now for long distances, much preferring her walker. There is an active NGO in our daughter's orphanage which may help with the good care that she appeared to receive there.
If you are adopting a child in a wheelchair, whether or not the child travels with and is allowed to keep the chair will vary according to the policy of the orphanage. If it is a concern to you, I'd talk with my agency and ask them to request that the child be allowed to keep their chair when they travel home. Honestly, I think it just doesn't occur to them sometimes that the child really would benefit from keeping it.
