Fingerprints of God

On June 15, 1999 Sparrow Records released an album by Steven Curtis Chapman entitled "Speechless."  It contained seven number one chart singles on Christian contemporary radio. This album is one of my personal favorites but my copy was no longer playable.  I was excited to find it in the bargain section at a store this past weekend.  I nabbed it immediately.  So how did it line up after a decade and a half?  It is still very relevant to my life and one song spoke to me in different way than it did fifteen years ago.

"Fingerprints of God" has always summed up the way I feel about ALL of my children.  But here on the other side of our China adoptions it speaks to me even more.  You see, my precious kids know great loss.  They know firsthand about living in a culture where their beautiful "imperfections" cost them greatly.   Even here in America their abilities are often judged by their appearance.  As this song played (on repeat) in my van last night I just wept.  I am honored and humbled that I get to be their Mama.  Abigail, Jen, Isaac, (and Pat) -  someday if you read this blog, know that your Mama loves you with all her heart and I DO see God's fingerprints all over you!  Our family is so blessed by you being a part of it.  Don't ever let anyone make you feel unworthy.

Click below to play the song.  In case you can't do video on your device, here are the words:

I can see the tears filling Your eyes
And I know where they're coming from
They're coming from a heart that's broken in two
By what you don't see
The person in the mirror
Doesn't look like the magazine
Oh, but when I look at you it's clear to me that...

I can see the fingerprints of God
When I look at you
I can see the fingerprints of God
And I know it's true
You're a masterpiece
That all creation quietly applauds
And you're covered with the fingerprints of God

Never has there been and never again
Will there be another you
Fashioned by God's hand
And perfectly planned
To be just who you are
And what He's been creating
Since the first beat of your heart
Is a living breathing priceless work of art and...

Just look at you
You're a wonder in the making
Oh, and God's not through, no
In fact, He's just getting started and…
